Cryostorage dewars / LN₂ tanks
Long-term storage of vitrified oocytes and embryos at −196°C in liquid or vapour phase.
What it is and how it's used
Safe as long as the LN₂ level stays above the minimum for the storage arrangement. Vacuum failure is slow and silent; boil-off rate is the early warning.
Typical failure modes
- Level allowed to fall below the top of stored devices (vapour warming).
- Vacuum loss: rising boil-off, frost on neck/shoulders.
- Late refills over holidays; alarm not connected/tested.
- Devices dislodged during moves.
What to check first
- Daily level log with a marked minimum line; refill schedule adherence.
- Consumption trend over months.
- Alarm test records; back-up tank and LN₂ supply plan.

Follow the manufacturer's guidance for fill levels and inspection; keep an inventory that maps every device to a position.
