Cryotop (vitrification device)
Open vitrification device: a thin polypropylene strip on which the embryo is loaded in a minimal volume, then plunged into LN₂.
What it is and how it's used
Loading volume and speed determine cooling rate. Open system means direct LN₂ contact (very fast cooling) and requires clean LN₂ practice.
Typical failure modes
- Ice formation from too much medium around the embryo.
- Device lot variation.
- Slow plunge or vapour pause reducing cooling rate.
- Loss of embryo during loading/unloading with poor pipette control.
What to check first
- Loading volume technique (video review).
- Plunge directness; LN₂ level in the vessel.
- Device lot vs survival cohort.

Follow the IFU; retrain loading with practice material regularly.
